Best eSIM for Europe: Plans, Prices and Coverage for UK Travellers

Last updated:
Author: Ervin Salihu

A Europe eSIM can give you prepaid mobile data for a holiday across several countries. Before buying one, check whether your UK mobile plan already covers your route and provides enough data for your stay.

This guide compares VIA eSIM, Airalo, Holafly, Nomad and Saily on price, data allowance, validity, country coverage and hotspot rules. The aim is to help you choose a plan for your actual trip, whether that is a week in Spain, a fortnight across France and Italy, or a longer journey through Europe.

Quick answer: The best eSIM for Europe from the UK is the plan that covers every country on your itinerary, lasts for your full stay and provides enough data at a suitable total price. If your UK plan already includes sufficient roaming data in all your destinations, using that allowance may be the cheapest option. Otherwise, compare a regional eSIM with your network’s cheapest suitable roaming pass.

Do UK travellers need an eSIM for Europe?

You may need a Europe eSIM if your UK plan charges for roaming, has an insufficient overseas data allowance or excludes countries on your route. If your existing allowance covers the whole trip at no extra cost, a separate eSIM may be unnecessary.

Roaming terms depend on your network, tariff and destination. For UK Pay Monthly phone customers, these are the main points to check:

  • O2: You can use your UK allowance in O2’s Europe Zone at no extra cost, subject to its terms. If your UK monthly allowance exceeds 25 GB, the roaming limit is 25 GB; if it is smaller, your lower allowance applies. Check that every destination is in the zone.

  • EE: Its current Pay Monthly price guide lists a £2.72 daily Europe charge for applicable tariffs without an inclusive roaming benefit or add-on. Qualifying older tariffs and plans with roaming included can have different terms. Check your exact plan and available passes before comparing costs.

  • Vodafone: Eligible Pay Monthly plans without inclusive Zone B roaming have a £2.75 daily charge. However, an 8-day European roaming pass costs £16 and a 15-day pass costs £21, subject to eligibility and a 25 GB roaming fair-use limit. Compare these passes with an eSIM rather than assuming you will pay the daily fee throughout your holiday.

  • Three: Check whether your plan includes roaming or Go Roam passes. Pay Monthly Go Roam allows up to 12 GB of your UK data allowance. Where a daily Europe charge applies, Three lists £2 for specified older plans and £2.75 for plans joined or upgraded on or after 18 December 2025, with the latter rate applying from 1 April 2026. Purchased passes may reduce the total cost.

Compare the total cost for your full trip, the usable data and the countries covered. An inclusive roaming allowance may be enough for a short holiday, while a regional eSIM may suit a trip where your existing allowance or coverage falls short.

Roaming information checked on 13 October 2026. Pay As You Go and other tariffs can have different terms.

How we compare Europe eSIM plans

We compare plans by the total cost of covering your trip, the data you can use and the countries included. Recommendations are based on providers’ published prices, coverage lists and plan conditions.

Total cost for 7, 14 and 30 days

A plan must cover your full stay and meet the data requirement being compared. A 15-day or 30-day package can be suitable for a 14-day holiday, but its actual validity and full purchase price should be clear.

Where an option requires another package or a top-up to cover the trip, that additional cost belongs in the comparison. For UK roaming, we include applicable multi-day passes and existing plan benefits.

Fixed data and unlimited plans

We compare fixed-data packages by allowance, validity and price. Unlimited packages are compared separately by trip length, with their high-speed data limits, reduced speeds and hotspot allowances shown where applicable.

For either type, check how much usable data the plan provides for your intended activities, especially if you will share the connection with a laptop or another traveller.

Country coverage and hotspot rules

The country list must match your itinerary. We check the destinations included in each specific package, including any stops in Switzerland, Turkey or the Balkans.

Hotspot support is assessed separately: the comparison distinguishes permission to share data from the amount available for sharing.

Currency, promotions and activation

We use GBP prices where the provider offers them. Otherwise, we retain the original currency and clearly label any GBP conversion as an estimate, with its conversion date.

Temporary offers are identified as promotions. We also check when validity starts, any deadline for activating the plan and whether switching it on in the UK could start its allowance before departure.

The best-value option is the one that meets your route, trip length and data needs at the lowest suitable total cost.

Europe eSIM comparison: plans, prices and coverage

Compare the total price, usable data and country coverage for your full trip. The selected packages below have different validity periods and speed policies, so check those conditions alongside the cost.

Fixed-data plans: 10 GB for a 14-day holiday

Each package provides 10 GB and remains valid for at least 14 days. The table shows its full validity period and purchase price.

Provider Validity Advertised coverage Listed price Approx. GBP
VIA eSIM Europe 60 days 44 countries €11.99 £10.13
Airalo Europe 15 days 41 countries US$28.00 £21.16
Nomad Europe 30 days 35-country option US$23.00 £17.38
Saily Europe 30 days 35 countries €31.99 £27.02

VIA eSIM has the lowest listed price among these selected 10 GB packages. Match the included destinations to your route before choosing. Nomad also offers a separate 36-country Europe option, with package details to check when purchasing.

Holafly’s prepaid Europe product provides unlimited data and appears in the separate comparison below.

For travellers who need more data, the VIA eSIM Europe page also lists a limited offer of 100 GB for 15 days at €14.99, approximately £12.66. Compare this fixed allowance with an unlimited package if it covers your expected usage and the promotion is still available.

Unlimited-data plans: covering 15 days

All options below can cover 15 days, but their speed policies and hotspot conditions differ. The Nomad example combines two separate packages.

Provider Listed price Approx. GBP Speed conditions Hotspot
VIA eSIM Europe €34.99 £29.56 Up to 3 Mbps throughout the plan Supported.
Airalo Europe US$49.00 £37.02 Daily high-speed allowance, then 1 Mbps Supported within the plan’s fair-use rules.
Holafly Europe US$51.50 £38.91 Local-network fair-use reductions may apply 1 GB per day.
Saily Europe €44.49 £37.58 5 GB of high-speed data per day, then up to 1 Mbps Supported within the plan’s data and speed conditions.
Nomad Europe, two packages US$53.00 total £40.04 Daily high-speed allowance; reduced speed varies by package Supported.

The Nomad example combines a 10-day package at US$34 and a 5-day package at US$19, costing US$53 in total. It requires two purchases, with the second package activated when the first expires.

Airalo’s default fair-use threshold is 3 GB of high-speed data per day, with exceptions stated in individual package details. Its seven-day Europe listing shows a 5 GB daily threshold, so check the allowance for your selected duration. Nomad’s guidance describes a 2 GB daily high-speed allowance for most unlimited plans; the reduced speed depends on the specific package.

VIA eSIM Europe Unlimited combines a lower listed price, hotspot support and unlimited data at up to 3 Mbps. Its 3 Mbps speed policy can be an advantage over plans that reduce speeds to 1 Mbps after a daily high-speed allowance is used, particularly for travellers with sustained daily data usage.

Compare the initial and reduced-speed conditions together. Some competing packages can provide higher speeds before their daily high-speed allowance is exhausted, while actual performance depends on local network conditions.

Holafly advertises coverage in 33 countries. Check its complete destination list alongside the other providers’ lists, especially for routes that include countries outside the EU.

Prices checked on 13 October 2026, without coupon codes or subscription discounts. GBP figures are estimates based on the ECB reference rates dated 12 October 2026: €1 = £0.84478 and US$1 ≈ £0.75555. Checkout prices and payment conversion charges may differ.

Europe eSIM providers compared

The best fit depends on your route, data usage and whether you need to share your connection. These are the main differences behind the prices above.

VIA eSIM

VIA eSIM is worth considering for its lower-priced fixed-data packages and Unlimited plan with hotspot support. Its Europe options include 10 GB valid for 60 days, alongside the limited 100 GB offer lasting 15 days. Hotspot sharing is supported on all Europe plans.

The Unlimited plan has a maximum speed of 3 Mbps throughout its validity. This can be an advantage compared with the reduced-speed phase of competing packages that drop to 1 Mbps after a daily high-speed allowance is used. Those competitors may offer higher speeds before that allowance runs out. Actual connection speeds also depend on network conditions.

Compare the VIA eSIM Europe plans according to your trip length, expected data use and preferred speed conditions.

Airalo

Airalo offers a choice of regional coverage and package durations. Its broader Europe product advertises 41 countries, while a separate European Union and United Kingdom product covers 28 countries. Check which country list matches your itinerary before comparing prices.

Airalo supports hotspot sharing on its Unlimited plans. Shared data counts towards the daily high-speed allowance, after which speeds reduce to 1 Mbps. The allowance can vary by package, so check the threshold shown for the exact duration you choose.

Holafly

Holafly suits travellers who want unlimited phone data for a chosen number of days. Its prepaid Europe product advertises coverage in 33 countries and includes 1 GB of hotspot data per day.

That sharing allowance matters if you plan to connect a laptop or another traveller’s phone. Unlimited data on your phone does not mean unlimited hotspot data.

Local-network fair-use policies may temporarily reduce speeds. Compare the covered destinations, daily sharing allowance and total price for your trip.

Nomad

Nomad is worth comparing for larger fixed-data allowances. Its Europe page lists promotional packages including 20 GB for 30 days at US$27 and 50 GB for 30 days at US$35. It also lists 35-country and 36-country coverage options, so check the selected version before purchasing. Promotional prices can change.

Nomad supports hotspot sharing across its plans. Its Unlimited packages have daily high-speed allowances, with reduced speeds depending on the selected package.

For a longer stay, check whether one package covers the full trip. The 15-day example in the table above combines two purchases, which adds an activation step when the first package expires.

Saily

Saily is worth considering if you want additional security features alongside your travel data. Its Europe product advertises coverage in 35 countries and includes an ad blocker, web protection and virtual location features.

Hotspot sharing is supported. The 15-day Unlimited package provides 5 GB per day without a plan speed limit, followed by data at up to 1 Mbps. Shared usage contributes to the plan’s allowance.

Consider how much you will use the additional features when comparing its price. For frequent streaming or sharing a connection for work, the daily high-speed allowance is particularly relevant.

Which Europe eSIM suits your trip?

Choose a package that covers your full route and stay, then match its data and speed conditions to how you use your phone. The examples below apply the comparison to three common trip lengths.

A seven-day city break

For a week in one city or country, check your included UK roaming allowance first. If you need additional data, compare a country-specific eSIM with a regional Europe package.

Use your recent mobile data usage as a starting point. Maps, messaging and browsing with access to accommodation Wi-Fi may suit a smaller fixed allowance. Frequent video streaming, uploads or hotspot sharing can justify more data.

Compare 5 GB and 10 GB options against your expected use. A package valid for 15, 30 or 60 days can still cover a seven-day trip; compare the full purchase price rather than paying for a particular validity label.

A 14-day holiday across several countries

For a trip such as France, Switzerland and Italy, check that every stop appears in the package’s country list. A regional plan can let you use the same allowance across covered destinations.

If 10 GB meets your needs, VIA eSIM’s €11.99 package has the lowest listed price among the selected 10 GB offers above and is valid for 60 days. For more data, its limited 100 GB offer costs €14.99 and lasts 15 days, covering a fortnight if activated at the appropriate time.

If you prefer Unlimited, compare the 15-day options by their speed policies and hotspot conditions as well as price. Include shared data when estimating your usage.

A 30-day trip with heavier data use

A longer trip needs both sufficient data and validity for the entire stay. Two fixed-data examples to compare are VIA eSIM’s 50 GB package for 30 days at €34.49, approximately £29.14, and Nomad’s promotional 50 GB package for 30 days at US$35, approximately £26.44. Match each package’s coverage to your route.

A 50 GB allowance averages roughly 1.7 GB per day over 30 days, although it is a total allowance rather than a daily limit. Compare that budget with your expected streaming, uploads and laptop usage.

If you need more, compare an Unlimited package covering all 30 days, checking its daily high-speed allowance, reduced speed and hotspot rules. VIA’s promotional 100 GB package lasts 15 days, so one purchase does not cover a month-long trip.

Prices and GBP estimates follow the comparison date and exchange-rate basis used above. Promotional offers may change.

Which countries are included in a Europe eSIM?

A Europe eSIM covers the destinations listed for the specific package you choose. Match that list to every stop on your itinerary, including overnight stays and transit stops where you will need mobile data.

Europe versus EU coverage

Providers use different country lists for regional packages. A Europe plan may include destinations outside the EU, such as Switzerland, Norway and Turkey. An EU-focused product can have a narrower list.

For example, Airalo’s 41-country Europe product and its 28-country European Union and United Kingdom product are separate options. Compare the list attached to the selected product.

Switzerland, Turkey and the Western Balkans

These destinations highlight some differences between the packages:

  • Switzerland: It appears in the Europe lists published by VIA eSIM, Saily and Nomad’s 35-country option. Check it explicitly if your trip combines Switzerland with neighbouring EU countries.

  • Turkey: VIA eSIM and Saily include Turkey in their Europe country lists. Nomad’s 35-country option does not list it, so that specific package would not cover a trip combining Greece and Turkey.

  • Western Balkans: VIA eSIM’s 44-country Europe list includes Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia. Kosovo is not listed in that package. If you choose it for a route that includes Kosovo, arrange separate data coverage for that stop.

Compare destinations rather than choosing by the country count alone. Saily and Nomad’s selected Europe option both advertise 35 countries, but their lists differ. Recheck the coverage variant when selecting your package.

A country-specific eSIM or a regional plan?

For a holiday entirely within one country, compare the local and regional packages by price, data allowance and validity. A regional promotion may still offer better value for that trip.

For several countries, a regional package covering the whole route can let you share one allowance across your destinations. If a stop is excluded, compare the total cost of adding a country-specific plan with choosing a wider regional package.

Country inclusion tells you where a plan can be used. Available speeds and signal quality still depend on the local network and your location.

How to set up your Europe eSIM before leaving the UK

Check compatibility and the package’s activation policy before installing, then select the travel eSIM for mobile data when you are ready to use it. Buying in advance does not necessarily mean the allowance starts on the purchase date.

Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked

Check your exact phone model and regional version against the provider’s compatibility list. The phone must support eSIM and be unlocked for use with another network.

On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About. An unlocked phone shows “No SIM Restrictions” beside Network Provider Lock.

Android setup varies by manufacturer. On supported Samsung Galaxy phones, the installation menu is Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Add eSIM. Follow the instructions for your particular device.

Check when the package’s validity starts

Read the activation policy before installing the eSIM. Some packages start when installed; others start when the eSIM first connects to a supported network. Also check any deadline for activation after purchase.

The UK is included in several Europe packages, including the Nomad and Saily products compared here. Connecting while you are still at home may therefore start the validity period. For a package activated by its first network connection, keep the installed travel line switched off until you are ready to start using it.

Use a stable internet connection to install through the provider’s app or QR code. Label the line clearly, for example “Europe data”, so you can distinguish it from your UK SIM.

If Turkey is on your route, follow the provider’s setup instructions before arrival. Saily advises purchasing and activating its plan before entering Turkey because its website and top-up options are unavailable there.

Select the travel eSIM for data and review your UK line

When you are ready to connect:

  1. Turn on the travel eSIM and select it as your mobile data line.

  2. Enable Data Roaming for the travel eSIM when required by its provider.

  3. Disable automatic mobile data switching or equivalent backup data options.

  4. Keep data roaming off for your UK SIM where your phone offers separate controls. Decide whether to leave that line active for calls and texts or switch it off.

On iOS 26 and later, you may see a dedicated travel eSIM setup. Follow the prompts and review which lines will remain active. Keeping your UK line active can still incur roaming charges under your tariff, even when its data roaming is off.

For device-specific steps, see our guide to turning data roaming on or off with an eSIM.

After arrival, briefly turn off Wi-Fi and load a website or map to confirm that mobile data works through the travel eSIM.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Europe eSIM cheaper than UK roaming?

It can be, if your UK plan charges for roaming or provides insufficient data. If your tariff already includes enough roaming data in every destination, using that allowance may cost less. Compare an eSIM with your network’s cheapest suitable roaming pass for the whole trip.

Can I buy and install a Europe eSIM while still in the UK?

Yes, you can buy online and usually install before departure on a compatible, unlocked phone. Check the activation policy first: some packages start at installation, others at their first supported network connection. If the UK is covered, connecting there may start the plan before you leave.

Can I keep my UK number and use WhatsApp?

Yes. On a compatible Dual SIM phone, you can use the Europe eSIM for data and keep your UK line available for calls and texts, subject to your tariff. Your existing WhatsApp account can continue using its UK number over the travel eSIM’s internet connection.

Do Europe eSIM plans include calls and SMS?

Check the package. VIA eSIM Europe is data-only, so ordinary mobile calls and SMS are not included. You can use internet calling and messaging apps over its data connection. Some providers offer separate calling products, such as Saily’s optional phone-number add-on, with their own prices and supported destinations.

Can I use a Europe eSIM as a hotspot?

Yes, when the selected package supports sharing. VIA eSIM’s Europe Standard and Unlimited plans both support hotspot. Holafly Europe includes 1 GB of shared data per day. Check the sharing allowance and remember that the package’s data and speed conditions also affect connected devices.

Does unlimited data mean unlimited high-speed data?

No. An unlimited package can have a speed cap or a daily high-speed allowance followed by reduced speeds. VIA eSIM Europe Unlimited has a maximum speed of 3 Mbps throughout its validity. Compare that cap with other plans’ initial and reduced-speed conditions.

Can one Europe eSIM work across several countries?

Yes, if you choose a regional package covering every destination. You can use the same eSIM across its included countries while the plan remains valid and has usable data. Crossing a border does not reset the allowance or extend the package’s validity.
