Egypt Roaming Charges: EE, O2, Vodafone and Three vs eSIM

Last updated:
Author: Ervin Salihu

Before landing in Hurghada, compare your UK provider’s Egypt roaming options with the mobile data you need for your stay. European roaming benefits do not automatically extend to Egypt.

Quick answer: If Egypt is included in your UK plan, review the data allowance, speed and calling terms before purchasing another package. If it is not included, compare the cheapest roaming pass for your full stay with a prepaid data eSIM. VIA eSIM’s Egypt plans start from €1.99 and provide data only.

Daily fees, multi-day passes and existing plan benefits can produce different costs for the same holiday. This guide compares the options from EE, O2, Vodafone and Three, alongside prepaid eSIM packages.

Is Roaming in Egypt Included in UK Mobile Plans?

Some plans do include Egypt. For example, O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Ultimate covers Egypt on O2 Ultimate Plans. It includes calls, texts and unlimited data under its terms, with data speeds capped at 2Mbps.

O2’s standard Travel Inclusive Zone is a different benefit. It covers 27 destinations outside Europe, and Egypt is not one of them. A customer with that benefit should still check whether the paid O2 Travel option or another package is needed.

Before choosing a roaming pass or an eSIM, confirm:

  • Whether Egypt is included in your exact plan.
  • How many roaming days or passes you have available.
  • Which data allowance, speed limit and call or text restrictions apply.
  • When an additional charge starts and how long the paid period lasts.

EE Roaming Charges in Egypt

For eligible EE Pay Monthly customers, Egypt is in Rest of World Zone 2. EE’s current price guide lists these passes, including VAT:

  • £8 for 24 hours.
  • £40 for 7 days.
  • £60 for 15 days.

They let you use your UK plan allowances, subject to roaming limits. For unlimited UK data plans, EE’s terms publish a 50GB fair use limit outside the UK.

For a holiday requiring continuous roaming:

  • Seven days: the £40 pass costs £16 less than seven £8 passes (£56).
  • Fourteen days: a £60, 15-day pass can cover the stay, compared with £112 for fourteen £8 passes.

These calculations cover the pass fee only and assume its validity covers the whole stay. Your normal UK monthly bill still applies.

EE’s Full Works roaming benefit covers Europe and Rest of World Zone 1. Egypt’s Zone 2 status means that benefit alone does not include Egypt.

Before using mobile data in Egypt, use EE’s roaming calculator or your EE account to confirm which pass or existing benefit applies to your tariff. Its standard ROW rates are £2.46 per minute for making or receiving calls and 98p per standard SMS.

ROW roaming is unavailable on EE Safer SIM plans.

O2 Roaming Charges in Egypt

For eligible O2 Pay Monthly customers, the paid O2 Travel Bolt On costs £7 per charged 24-hour period in Egypt. It includes unlimited data, minutes and texts under O2’s terms, with data speeds capped at 2Mbps.

If the fee applies across seven or fourteen charged periods:

  • 7 charged 24-hour periods: £49.
  • 14 charged 24-hour periods: £98.

These are additional roaming fees, separate from your normal UK monthly bill.

The paid period lasts 24 hours from your first qualifying use. It starts when you use mobile data, make an included outgoing call or send an included text. Receiving calls or texts alone does not trigger the charge.

Make sure the Bolt On is active in My O2 before using the service abroad. O2 Travel is not available on Pay As You Go. Premium-rate numbers, MMS and non-standard texts are excluded from the daily package.

If your plan includes O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Ultimate, Egypt is covered under that benefit without the additional £7 charge. Its data speed limit is also 2Mbps.

Vodafone Roaming Charges in Egypt

Vodafone places Egypt in Zone D. For Pay Monthly plans, its 2026 roaming guide lists:

  • £8 a day for plans that started on or after 11 August 2021.
  • £6 a day for plans that started before 11 August 2021.

If that daily fee applies throughout your stay, with no Extra or benefit changing the cost:

  • 7 charged days: £56 at the £8 rate, or £42 at the £6 rate.
  • 14 charged days: £112 at the £8 rate, or £84 at the £6 rate.

These are roaming fees in addition to your normal UK monthly bill.

Check both your UK data allowance and Vodafone’s 25GB monthly roaming fair use limit. If your UK allowance is smaller than 25GB, that lower allowance applies. An unlimited UK data plan therefore does not provide unlimited roaming data in Egypt.

Vodafone’s Global Roam benefit covers Zones A, B and C. Egypt is in Zone D, so that benefit alone does not include it. Vodafone’s 8-day and 15-day European Roaming Passes also do not cover Egypt.

Calls to non-UK numbers can carry additional charges, so confirm the cost of calling an Egyptian hotel or tour operator separately.

These examples apply to Pay Monthly plans. Pay As You Go and Pay As You Go Plus have separate roaming options for Egypt.

Three Roaming Charges in Egypt

For eligible Three Pay Monthly customers, Egypt is a Go Roam Around the World Extra destination. The cheaper Europe and standard Around the World passes do not cover it.

Before paying, check My3 for inclusive roaming or remaining passes that cover Egypt. Some plans already provide a suitable benefit.

When a daily charge applies, Three’s Go Roam information currently lists:

  • £7 per 24 hours for customers who joined or upgraded between 1 October 2021 and 17 December 2025.
  • £8 per 24 hours for customers who joined or upgraded on or after 18 December 2025, with that rate effective from 1 April 2026.

Qualifying SIM Only 24-month Lite plans with 25GB or 120GB, taken from 1 June 2025, retain the £7 rate. Confirm your exact plan in My3.

Three’s current price guide also lists these Around the World Extra passes:

  • 7 days: £42.
  • 14 days: £84.

At the £8 daily rate, seven charged 24-hour periods cost £56 and fourteen cost £112. The corresponding passes can therefore reduce the additional roaming cost. Once activated, the 7-day pass lasts 168 hours and the 14-day pass lasts 336 hours, so check that the chosen pass covers your stay.

The daily charge starts when you use an eligible UK allowance, such as mobile data, a call to a standard UK number or a text to the UK. It unlocks that allowance for 24 hours.

Three’s fair use terms limit roaming data to up to 12GB per month, drawn from your UK allowance. Buying another pass does not provide another 12GB. Personal hotspot is not permitted under Go Roam Around the World Extra. Calls and texts to Egyptian numbers can incur separate charges.

Go Roam Around the World Extra is unavailable on Pay As You Go and Pay Monthly plans that started before 1 October 2021. Those customers need to check Egypt’s standard roaming rates separately.

Is an Egypt eSIM Cheaper Than UK Roaming?

An Egypt data eSIM can cost less than paid UK roaming if you mainly need mobile internet. If your existing plan already covers Egypt and provides enough data, using that benefit may avoid an additional purchase.

VIA eSIM’s standard Egypt packages currently include:

  • 1GB for 7 days: €1.99.
  • 3GB for 30 days: €6.49.
  • 5GB for 30 days: €9.99.
  • 15GB for 30 days: €14.99.

A seven-day holiday does not require a seven-day package. A 30-day plan can also cover a shorter stay. For a 14-day trip, choose a package whose validity covers the full visit; the 1GB, seven-day option alone would not do that.

For example, if 5GB is enough for your entire trip, the €9.99 package can cover either seven or fourteen days within its 30-day validity. Your data use, rather than the length of the holiday alone, determines whether that allowance is suitable.

The paid O2 Travel alternative costs £49 for seven charged 24-hour periods or £98 for fourteen. It includes unlimited data, calls and texts under O2’s terms, with data speeds capped at 2Mbps.

Compare the eSIM with your cheapest eligible roaming option, including any multi-day pass available for Egypt. Multiplying a network’s daily rate by every holiday day can overstate the cost when a suitable pass costs less.

UK roaming fees above are in pounds; VIA eSIM prices are in euros. Convert both to the same currency before calculating an exact saving.

These VIA packages provide data only. Standard calls and SMS on your UK SIM remain subject to your network’s roaming charges. If you need additional data, include the cost of another package or top-up in your comparison.

How to Avoid UK Roaming Charges When Using an Egypt eSIM

Installing an Egypt eSIM does not automatically stop your UK SIM from roaming. You need to select the correct line for mobile data and check how your phone handles calls and messages.

Before travelling, confirm that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked for use with another provider. Install your Egypt eSIM while you have a reliable internet connection.

Then check these settings:

  1. Select the Egypt eSIM for mobile data. Label the lines clearly, such as “UK SIM” and “Egypt eSIM”, so you can identify them easily.
  2. Check Data Roaming for each line. Enable it for the Egypt eSIM if your activation instructions require it. Keep it off for your UK SIM where separate controls are available. Some Android phones share a roaming setting, so confirm that the Egypt eSIM is the selected data line.
  3. Disable automatic data switching. Turn off options such as “Allow Mobile Data Switching”, “Automatic Data Switching” or “Auto Data Switching”, where available. This prevents your phone from automatically selecting your UK SIM for mobile data.
  4. Decide whether you need your UK number active. You can keep it available for verification texts, but standard calls and messages remain subject to your carrier’s roaming terms. Turning off Data Roaming alone does not block those charges.
  5. Turn off the UK line if you do not need it. This stops that SIM from connecting to Egyptian mobile networks. Ordinary calls and SMS, including verification codes, will be unavailable on that line.

On iOS 26 and later, your iPhone may offer a travel eSIM setup. Choose “Travel eSIM Only” if you do not need your home line. Keeping both lines active can still leave you exposed to home-carrier roaming fees.

After arriving, briefly switch off Wi-Fi and open a website to check the connection. For phone-specific menus, follow our eSIM data roaming settings guide.

Frequently Asked Questions About Egypt Roaming

Is Egypt included in European roaming?

No. European roaming benefits do not automatically cover Egypt. Check Egypt by name in your provider’s destination list and confirm the benefits attached to your exact plan.

Does O2 roaming include Egypt?

The paid O2 Travel Bolt On covers Egypt for £7 per charged 24-hour period, starting from your first qualifying use. Customers with O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Ultimate have Egypt included without that additional charge. Both services cap data speeds at 2Mbps.

Does Vodafone Global Roam cover Egypt?

No. Vodafone Global Roam covers Zones A, B and C, while Egypt is in Zone D. Check your account for the daily charge or any destination-specific Extra available for your plan.

Is Egypt included in Three Go Roam?

Egypt is a Go Roam Around the World Extra destination for eligible Pay Monthly customers. You need suitable inclusive roaming, an Extra pass or a daily roaming charge. This category is unavailable on Pay As You Go and Pay Monthly plans that started before 1 October 2021.

Does unlimited UK data mean unlimited data in Egypt?

Not necessarily. Three Go Roam has a 12GB monthly data fair use limit, while Vodafone generally applies a 25GB monthly roaming limit. A smaller UK allowance can reduce what you can use. Check the overseas allowance separately from your UK data plan.

Can I keep my UK number while using an Egypt eSIM?

Yes, on a compatible, unlocked Dual SIM phone. Select the Egypt eSIM for mobile data and keep your UK line active if you need your number. Standard calls and SMS on that line remain subject to your UK provider’s roaming terms.

Does turning off Data Roaming prevent every roaming charge?

No. It prevents roaming data use on the affected line, but standard calls and SMS can still incur charges. If you do not need your UK number during the trip, turn that SIM line off completely.

Does VIA eSIM’s Egypt package include an Egyptian phone number?

VIA eSIM’s standard Egypt packages are data-only. They provide mobile internet without an Egyptian calling number or an allowance of standard calls and SMS. Your existing UK number remains separate.

Which Option Should You Choose for Egypt?

Start with what your UK mobile plan already includes, then compare any additional cost for your whole stay.

  • Use included roaming if Egypt is covered on your exact plan and the data allowance, speed and calling terms meet your needs.
  • Consider a paid roaming pass if you need standard calls and SMS alongside mobile internet. Check multi-day options before paying a daily charge throughout your holiday.
  • Consider a data eSIM if you mainly need internet for maps, bookings, browsing and messaging. Choose an allowance and validity period that cover your trip, and include any additional data purchases in the total cost.

VIA eSIM’s standard Egypt packages provide prepaid mobile data. Compare a suitable package with your cheapest eligible roaming option, while accounting for the calls and texts each service includes.

Before arriving, check your phone’s data settings and decide whether to keep your UK SIM active.
